I’m sure I am biased. But frankly, I don’t know of a better timeto visit Lutsen and the North Shore than early Spring. Why, the reasons are many. The spring peepers – are peeping. The hiking trails are virgin. The north shore streams are rushing with great power. The three season forest service and logging roads are open – perfect for back country mountain biking. It’s quiet. The mornings are crisp. There is new life in the wilderness. And, lodging rates are low and there is little overall activity. Perfect.

Who would of thunk! Several weeks ago we were getting pounded with snow. It was epic. Best of everything – Best snowmobile and cross country trail conditions all year. Downhill skiing had powder days with more to come. A couple three weeks later, it disappeared. Wow. So…..what do you do……as the ole saying goes….take the lemon and make lemonaide.

The Mountain still has great music planned into April. And for the purist skiers – yup, big turns are still available. You just may have to pick your line a little earlier. And why not take advantage of this spring like weather. The Rivers are raging, the hiking trials are open (and dry) and biking – bring them all along. And for those who are looking for 5-100 mile rides, ask for Mike. He knows just about every route possible. And what the heck, he will likely want to show you the way. Really; what more can you ask for. We’ve had nearly 2′ of snow over the last several weeks. Downhill skiing is primo. Combine that with some bluebird days and you likely will have a taste of heaven. The cross-country and snowmobile trails are in the best conditions they have ever been in for the entire year so far. Then there is great music scheduled all March and into April. Oh, bring your bike too! With the longer days take a break after skiing and before music for a ride. The back roads are perfect. The inaugural 2011 Lutsen 99er bike race proved to be a great success. As a result, we are moving forward with our 2012 event, an event that is fast becoming known as Minnesota’s premier endurance mountain biking event. In keeping with our inaugural tradition, we will continue to host the Lutsen 39er, a shorter less demanding race that attracts a wide audience.

The race date is set for June 23rd. You now register on-line for either the 99 or 39 mile bike event at www.lutsen99er.com.

And Yet More Snow!

Once again, we’ve had a series of recent and smaller snowfalls that continue to blanket our area. Last Friday, there was a classic lake effect 2″ snowfall over a period of about 1 1/2 hours. Then on Monday, I woke up to about 3″ up on the Caribou. Again, we have not had a classic winter storm yet this season, but the snow continues to accumulate. Matter-of-fact, I was out last night and shoveled snow off the roof of my cabin…..it was that deep. Unfortunately, the annual John Beargrease Sled Dog race was recently cancelled as the result of poor snow conditions. But those poor snow and trail conditions were south of Cook County. Because we have snow, the area put together a sled dog race on the Gunflint Trail in replacement of the John Beargrease event. Combined with mild temps, it’s been a great winter to be in the woods, on XC slopes and on the slopes of Lutsen Mountains (and yes, on the bike too!).

Yup, more snow. Again, not a classic "noreaster" or suprise Lake Effect - just another couple 3-4" scattered about the Lutsen area. And with temps in the 20's and 30's this coming week and weekend......Perfect.

I recently drove from Lutsen to Minneapolis to take my daughter back to college. Not too far out of Lutsen, I found no snow along the roadside. It was brown! Duluth had no snow, and of course the Twin Cities had no snow anywhere. Even the snow banks were virtually non-existent. While Lutsen has not received its normal share of snow this winter, at least we have snow. It feels like every other day or so we get an inch, maybe two. Before you know it, all these little Alberta Clippers add up and the result is we have a fair amount snow in the woods and on the slopes. The downhill skiing and snowboarding at Lutsen has been fantastic. And I serve as an excellent source. I am the assistant Alpine Ski Coach and I’ve been on the hill 4-5 days a week with the kids since late November. The Cross Country skiing further inland has some good conditions. While we are still looking for our classic 6-16″ lake effect snowfall (which can occur without warning), the winter conditions thus far remain good for all your winter adventures.
